How to lime a lawn (and how to tell you shouldn't)

Lime is the most confidently misapplied product in lawn care. It gets spread every spring by people who have never measured their soil pH, on the theory that lime "sweetens" soil and sweeter must be better. It isn't a fertilizer or a tonic; it does one thing: raise soil pH. Across much of the American Midwest and West — and most of chalky southern England — soil is already neutral or alkaline, so liming there does nothing good and something actively bad. Push past about 7.2 and iron and manganese lock up chemically: a yellowing lawn caused by the bag you bought to help it.

So this guide starts where every honest liming guide has to: a soil test, or nothing. Iowa State's extension service puts it plainly: apply liming material only when a soil test recommends it, because raising the pH of neutral or alkaline soil reduces nutrient availability and leads to poor growth. Once a report says your lawn is acidic, the job is simple — the right amount, spread evenly, watered in, then patience.

Do you actually need to lime?

There is no visual test for soil pH: yellow grass, moss, weeds and thin turf all have a dozen possible causes, and none proves acidity. The only decision test is a number.

Target pH by grass. Most cool- and warm-season lawn grasses sit comfortably between pH 6.0 and 7.0; Purdue treats 6.0 to 7.5 as acceptable for turf. The exceptions are on the acid end: centipedegrass is happiest around 5.0–6.0, and fine fescues are the most acid-tolerant common cool-season grasses, holding on around 5.5. Identify the grass before acting on a number.

If the pH is too high, lime is the enemy and elemental sulfur is the tool. Soil bacteria oxidize it into acid over months, and rates stay low — Purdue advises no more than 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft (2.5 kg per 100 m²) per application, 10 lb (5 kg) a year. On naturally calcareous soils, chasing a lower pH is a losing project: treat the symptom with chelated iron (see yellowing grass).

When to lime a lawn

Lime is slow chemistry, so timing is about runway, not a narrow window. Fall is ideal: the material gets the whole dormant season to react, and in cold climates freeze–thaw cycles work particles down into the profile. Arkansas extension recommends fall and early winter for that reason. Hot, dry midsummer is the least useful moment.

One rule outranks the season: don't lime on the day you fertilize if the fertilizer contains urea or ammonium nitrogen. Lime raises pH at the soil surface, and a raised surface pH drives ammonia volatilization — nitrogen leaving as gas instead of feeding the lawn. Montana State's work shows losses climbing on calcareous, free-lime soils for this reason. It doesn't damage grass; it wastes the bag. Leave a couple of weeks between the two.

What you need

The rate comes from your report, not the bag. Typical recommendations land between 25 and 50 lb per 1,000 sq ft (12–25 kg per 100 m²). Sources differ on the ceiling: Arkansas extension caps a single application at 50 lb per 1,000 sq ft (25 kg per 100 m²), Purdue allows up to 100 lb (50 kg) on higher-cut turf. Take the conservative number — if the report asks for 90 lb, apply 45 now and 45 in six months. Texture matters too, since clay resists pH change far more stubbornly than sand: Clemson advises cutting the rate by a third on sand and raising it by half on clay.

Gypsum and wood ash are not substitutes. Gypsum is calcium sulfate: the calcium would raise pH, the sulfate lowers it, and they cancel — it does not change soil pH at all. Iowa State calls it a tool for sodic soils in the arid West, of little benefit elsewhere, and it won't loosen clay. Wood ash does raise pH, but its strength varies with species and burn and there is no label rate.

Liming a lawn, step by step

  1. Do the arithmetic. Measure the lawn and multiply out your report's rate. If the total exceeds 50 lb per 1,000 sq ft (25 kg per 100 m²), halve it — you're doing this twice, six months apart, not once heroically.
  2. Mow and clear the surface. Cut at your normal height and rake off leaves, so the lime lands on turf and soil rather than on litter that gets bagged away next week. Dry grass beats wet.
  3. Core-aerate first if you can. The biggest accelerator available: lime otherwise dissolves its way down slowly, and cores give it hundreds of open channels into the root zone. Extension guidance for established lawns is to lime after aeration and water it in.
  4. Set the spreader to half rate. Look up the setting for your product — lime is heavier than fertilizer, so a fertilizer setting over-applies. Load the hopper on a driveway, so a spill is sweepable.
  5. Make two perpendicular passes. North–south at half rate, then east–west at half rate. Right-angle passes cover the wheel lines a single pass leaves, and with a product this slow a striped application means a striped pH for years.
  6. Sweep hard surfaces, then water it in — about 1/4 in (6 mm). Lime left on a driveway stains and washes into storm drains, so broom it back onto the grass. Then water enough to rinse dust off the blades and start pellets breaking down, without causing runoff. If rain is due within a day, let the rain do it.
  7. Log the date, rate and product. Everyone skips this: in 6 to 12 months you retest, and the new number only means something if you know what went down.

Aftercare

There is almost nothing to do, and that is the hard part — the lawn will not look different next week. Keep mowing, watering and feeding on your normal schedule, with the one exception above: keep urea and ammonium fertilizer about two weeks clear of the lime.

Retest in 6 to 12 months, in the same season, so the numbers compare. If pH has moved into range you are finished — most lawns need liming every few years at most, some never. If it moved partway, apply the second half. If it didn't move at all, check that the product really was a carbonate lime and that you spread the rate you calculated.

UK and Europe: the same bag under another name

"Garden lime" in UK and European garden centres is ground limestone — calcium carbonate, the identical active ingredient as American lawn lime. Ground chalk and calcified seaweed are the same chemistry. The RHS notes that hydrated lime, sold by builders' merchants, is quick-acting but irritates skin and eyes — the same reason turf programs steer homeowners away from it. One real difference: RHS rates are per square metre for digging into the top 20 cm (8 in) of bare soil — a much bigger dose than surface-applying to turf. On a lawn, use your soil test.

Does my lawn need lime?

Only if a soil test says the pH is below the range your grass wants — roughly 6.0 for most lawn grasses, about 5.5 for centipedegrass and fine fescue. Lime is a pH correction, not a fertilizer, and it should go down only when a test asks for it. On neutral or alkaline soil it locks up iron and manganese instead.

No. Moss is a symptom of shade, compaction, poor drainage and thin turf, not of acid soil. The two travel together because both like damp shade, but liming a mossy lawn whose pH is fine changes nothing. Fix light, drainage and compaction first.
