How to aerate a lawn: core aeration, step by step
The classic aeration mistake isn't skipping the job — it's doing it with the wrong tool. Spiked sandals, a rolling spike drum and the tow-behind "aerator" all punch holes, and none of them relieve compaction. A solid spike driven into packed soil displaces that soil sideways and glazes the wall of every hole, leaving the ground denser than it was. Purdue Extension is blunt: slicing and spiking remove no soil and are not aerification. The job that works pulls plugs out and drops them on the surface.
The other half is timing. A rented core aerator dragged across baked July soil bounces and leaves dimples; on soggy ground it smears the hole walls shut and tears turf on every turn. Do you actually need to aerate?
Most lawns don't, most years. Aeration fixes two problems — compaction and excess thatch. Without either, you're paying a rental fee to stress your turf. Four checks:
- The screwdriver test. Water the lawn, wait a day, then push a long screwdriver in at six spots with normal hand pressure. Sliding in 4–6 in (10–15 cm) is fine; stopping at 2–3 in (5–8 cm) is compaction.
- The thatch wedge. Cut a pie-slice of turf 3 in (8 cm) deep and look side-on: between green blades and soil sits a brown, spongy layer. Up to ½ in (13 mm) is useful; over ½ in blocks water and air; over 1 in (25 mm) takes several seasons to reverse.
- Water behaviour. Irrigation that puddles or runs off, or turf still soggy long after the beds have drained.
- The history. Heavy clay, a builder's lawn over graded ground, dog runs, goalmouths, the shortcut to the bins, anywhere a vehicle parks. As University of Maryland Extension notes, compacted soil doesn't recover unaided.
Two or more signals means aerate; one weak signal on a lawn growing well means wait a year. If thatch over 1 in (25 mm) is the only issue, a core aerator won't remove enough of it — that's a job for a dethatcher or power rake.
When to aerate
One rule underlies every date below: aerate only when the grass is actively growing, so it can knit the holes closed. Purdue Extension puts cool-season aerification in September or April; Clemson advises leaving four weeks of growing weather afterwards.

Soil moisture the day before matters more than the exact date. Apply about 1 in (25 mm) of water 12 to 24 hours ahead if there's been no rain — enough that tines cut cleanly, not so much that the ground squelches. UW–Madison Extension calls soil moisture the key factor for success.

Core aeration, step by step
- Water 12–24 hours ahead. About 1 in (25 mm) if it hasn't rained. Tines need moisture to pull a full-depth core; on dry soil they skate. Re-run the screwdriver test that morning.
- Mow slightly low and clear the surface. Cut to the low end of your grass type's range, bag the clippings, remove leaves and toys. Shorter turf lets you see cores land and helps seed reach soil later.
- Flag everything hidden. Irrigation heads and pipe, shallow lighting cable, invisible dog-fence wire, septic lids, meter boxes, surface tree roots. In the US, call 811 a few working days ahead for free utility marking — but 811 covers utility-owned lines only; your sprinklers and pet fence stay your job.
- Collect the machine with help. A walk-behind core aerator typically weighs 200–300 lb (90–140 kg) and needs a trailer or ramp plus a second pair of hands. Measure the lawn before booking a slot.
- First pass in straight lines. Walk it like a mower, overlapping slightly. Lift or disengage the tines before every turn — pivoting with them down tears turf and bends tines. Take the ends slowly; the drum is heavy.
- Two to three passes in different directions. Purdue's target is 20–40 holes per square foot (roughly 215–430 per m²) at 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm) deep, and it warns most rental machines won't reach that in one pass — hence extra runs at 45° or 90° to the first. For scale: ¾ in tines at 2 × 2 in spacing give 36 holes per ft²; at 3 × 3 in, only 16.
- Count holes before you stop. Drop a 1 ft (30 cm) square on three spots and actually count; a dozen holes means another pass, plus an extra run over traffic paths. This is the step homeowners skip, and why so many aerations show no improvement.
- Leave the cores where they fall. They look like a goose convention passed through, then rain and mowing break them down over one to two weeks. Clemson notes the cores carry soil microorganisms into the thatch layer — much of how aeration reduces thatch. If you can't stand it, drag them in once dry.

Aftercare: the holes are the opportunity
For a few days you have thousands of open channels into the root zone, and they close fast. UW–Madison Extension's order for a thin lawn on poor soil: aerate, top dress, overseed.
- Overseed the same day. Seed landing in a hole gets soil contact, shade and moisture for free — which is why autumn aeration and overseeding are one job (overseeding guide).
- Fertilise after aerating, not before — starter fertiliser at 0.5–1 lb N per 1,000 ft² (0.25–0.5 kg per 100 m²) if you seeded, your normal autumn feed if not (when to fertilize).
- Top dress, and add lime or sulphur if a soil test called for it. Brush in ¼ in (6 mm) of compost or sandy loam so grass tips still show — on clay this changes the soil rather than just perforating it. Amendments move slowly through soil, and these holes are the fastest route to the root zone they'll get (soil test).
- Water and stay off. Light, frequent watering for two weeks if you seeded, then back to deep and infrequent (watering guide). No traffic for two to three weeks.
Aeration and pre-emergent are on a collision course
Spring crabgrass preventer forms a thin chemical barrier in the topsoil, and a core aerator pulls holes straight through it. Labels generally tell you not to aerate after application — and the label is the law, in the US and EU alike. Turf research has been more forgiving (trials back to Johnson's 1987 work repeatedly failed to show worse crabgrass control after coring), but you don't overrule a label with a journal paper. Clean solution: aerate in autumn, apply pre-emergent in spring, never both within eight weeks. UK and EU homeowners mostly dodge this — few US consumer pre-emergents are approved for amateur sale in Europe, so aeration plus overseeding is the weed-prevention programme.

How often, and when to skip it
Annually for clay soils, high-traffic lawns, dog runs and anyone overseeding each autumn anyway — University of Maryland Extension recommends once a year in autumn, just before seeding, where there's regular foot traffic. Otherwise every two to three years is plenty, also the RHS's advice for UK lawns. Skip it on a lawn that passes the screwdriver test and drains well. Aeration also can't fix what it gets blamed for: ground wet from a high water table needs drainage, not holes, and turf thin from shade, disease or grubs stays thin after coring — check what's actually wrong first.

How do I know if my lawn actually needs aerating?

How often should I aerate my lawn?
Once a year for clay soils, heavy foot traffic, dog runs and any lawn you overseed each autumn anyway. Every two to three years is enough on decent loam with light use — the interval both University of Maryland Extension and the RHS land on. If the same area compacts yearly, fix the traffic route.
