How to fertilize a lawn: rates, spreader settings and a burn-free pass
Nearly every fertilizer failure is an arithmetic failure made in the shop. The bag says covers 5,000 sq ft, the lawn is “about that”, so the whole bag goes on at whatever number sits near the barcode. Two weeks later the lawn is a barcode: dark stripes where passes overlapped, pale where they didn't, scorched arcs where the spreader turned with the hopper open.
Applying fertilizer isn't a skill, it's a routine: measure the lawn once, convert one nitrogen rate into pounds of that specific bag, halve it, and walk the lawn twice at right angles. The rest — dry blades, header strips, a swept drive, a quarter inch of water — keeps the nitrogen where you put it. For which month and how often, use the fertilizing calendar.
Do you actually need to fertilize?
- Pale, thin, slow-growing turf that still gets water — feed it. Mowing every 10 days in season instead of every 5–7 means hungry.
- Deep green and dense, needing two mows a week — skip. More nitrogen buys surge growth, thatch and disease.
- Yellow in a pattern — stripes, rings, blotches — isn't a nitrogen problem. Start with the yellow grass guide.
- Straw-coloured and dormant from drought or heat — skip. Purdue is explicit: don't fertilize dormant or severely drought-stressed turf.
- Newly seeded — wait until it has been mowed two or three times; see the overseeding guide.
- Frozen, waterlogged, or fed in the last six weeks — skip, whatever the four-step bag implies.
When to fertilize: the 60-second version
Grass type decides the calendar, not the store display; month-by-month detail is in the when to fertilize guide. On the day itself you also want moist soil, dry blades, mild temperatures and no downpour due for 24–48 hours.

Reading the bag and doing the rate math
N-P-K is percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphate and potash: 20-0-10 is 20% nitrogen, no phosphorus, 10% potassium. Below it, find the nitrogen source — slow-release, coated, water-insoluble (WIN) — and what share is in that form. That share separates six weeks of steady colour from a ten-day surge.
The coverage claim is marketing, not a rate. A 14 lb bag of 28-0-3 claiming 5,000 sq ft puts down 2.8 lb per 1,000 sq ft — 0.78 lb of actual nitrogen. Check any bag: weight ÷ claimed thousands of sq ft × first number ÷ 100.
The formula that matters, used by Clemson and Penn State alike: divide 100 by the first number for pounds of product per 1,000 sq ft delivering 1 lb of actual nitrogen. In metric, divide 50 by it for kilograms per 100 m².

Worked example. Lawn 4,000 sq ft (370 m²), product 20-0-10. 100 ÷ 20 = 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft, so the lawn takes 20 lb (about 9 kg) — 10 lb per pass at a 2.5 lb setting.
The ceiling. Purdue's rule: no more than 1 lb of actual nitrogen per application. Where over half the nitrogen is slow-release, up to about 2 lb is tolerated — and Purdue still says to split it into two or more applications. Quick-release urea belongs nearer a third of a pound.
The middle number is a legal question too. Established lawns rarely need phosphorus, and several US states restrict it: Minnesota bans it on lawns and turf unless a soil test shows a need or a lawn is being seeded or sodded, with comparable rules in Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Wisconsin. Buy a 0 in the middle unless a soil test says otherwise.
UK and EU bags: same math, metric units
British and European “lawn feed” uses the same N-P-K analysis, so the arithmetic transfers: 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft is 5 g of nitrogen per square metre — a 20-0-10 feed at 25 g/m². Autumn products are deliberately low in nitrogen and high in potassium; the RHS advises an autumn-specific feed because it drives roots rather than leaf, so don't finish the season on leftover summer feed. US-style weed-and-feed is also far less available to UK and EU consumers, where the norm is straight feed plus spot-treating weeds.
Write the number on the bag
Put it on the bag in marker: area, total weight, half-rate setting, date applied. You will not redo this arithmetic next spring.
Fertilizing a lawn, step by step
- Measure the lawn, then convert the rate. Break it into rectangles, triangles and circles (length × width; ½ × base × height; π × radius²) and subtract house, drive and beds; pacing works if you calibrate your stride first, since most adult paces run 2.5–3 ft (0.75–0.9 m). Turn the total into pounds of your bag, then halve it — one half per direction.
- Mow a day or two ahead, at your normal height. Leave the clippings; they return nitrogen. A shorter canopy lets granules reach soil instead of perching on blades. Mowing straight afterwards only scatters your fertilizer.
- Wait for dry grass and a calm, mild day. Clemson's instruction is to apply when temperatures are cooler and the leaves are dry, then water thoroughly — granules stuck to wet blades sit there and burn. Skip breezy days with a rotary spreader.
- Load on the driveway, hopper closed. Shut the gate before filling, fill no higher than the rim, and load over hard surface so a spill sweeps up instead of burning a hole in the lawn. Set the dial to the bag's half-rate figure, or a click or two below full.
- Calibrate before you trust the dial. Penn State is blunt that bag settings can't be trusted, because ground speed and spreaders vary. Measure your effective swath width, mark a 50 ft (15 m) strip, weigh the hopper, walk it at your normal pace with the gate open only between the marks, then weigh what's left. At 2.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft with a 10 ft swath, a 500 sq ft strip should remove 1.25 lb.
- Lay header strips, and turn outside the lawn. Walk two passes around the perimeter first. Those strips become your turning ground: from then on you travel up and back, closing the hopper before every turn — a turn made with the gate open leaves a scorched arc visible six weeks later. Beside a bed or pond, shut the side deflector or use a drop spreader for that edge.
- Fill in with two half-rate passes at right angles. Run the lawn north–south, then east–west; Penn State recommends exactly this, because the grid masks the skips and overlaps that cause striping and burn. With a rotary spreader, aim the thin outer edge of the throw pattern at your previous wheel track — that overlap evens the pattern rather than doubling the dose. With a drop spreader, butt each pass against the last like wallpaper and overlap the wheel tracks, since product falls only between the wheels.
- Sweep the hard surfaces, then water in 0.25–0.5 in (6–12 mm). Purdue is specific: return granules from sidewalks, driveways and roads to the turf with a broom or blower — anything left on concrete goes down the storm drain in the next rain. Then run the sprinkler into a straight-sided tin until it holds that much, ideally within 24 hours. Weed-and-feed is the exception: its herbicide must stick to damp weed foliage first, and for any product containing a pesticide the label is the law.

Aftercare
First 48 hours. Stay off the lawn until the granules are watered in and the surface has dried — foot traffic grinds them into concentrated spots. Keep pets and children off for the interval the label specifies.
First fortnight. Slow-release greens gradually over 10–14 days; quick-release urea colours up in 3–5 days then flattens. Don't add more because “nothing happened” by day four — that is how lawns get double-fed.
Then clean the spreader. Empty it, rinse hopper, plate and axle, and dry fully before storage; fertilizer salt is corrosive and will seize the gate within a season. Log date, product, rate and area.

Granular or liquid?
Granular is the default here: slow-release nitrogen, cheap per pound of N, forgiving once calibrated. Liquid gives fast, even colour with no striping on small lawns, but its nitrogen is mostly quick-release and you'll be back in two or three weeks. Either way the 1 lb N ceiling is the same.
Fertilizing FAQ
How much fertilizer do I need per 1,000 square feet?
Divide 100 by the first number on the bag. A 20-0-10 needs 5 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft (2.5 kg per 100 m²) to deliver 1 lb of actual nitrogen; 28-0-3 needs 3.6 lb (1.8 kg); urea at 46-0-0 needs 2.2 lb (1.1 kg). Multiply that by your measured lawn area.
Should I mow before or after fertilizing?
Mow a day or two before, at your normal height, and leave the clippings. A shorter canopy lets granules reach the soil instead of resting on leaf blades, and the lawn has time to dry. Do not mow straight after a granular application: the mower scatters or collects the granules.
Do I have to water in lawn fertilizer?
Yes for granular products, unless the label says otherwise. About 0.25 to 0.5 in (6 to 12 mm) within 24 hours rinses granules off the leaves and into the root zone, which is what prevents burn. Weed-and-feed is the exception: its herbicide must stick to damp weed foliage first, so follow that label.
Broadcast spreader or drop spreader?
A rotary or broadcast spreader is faster and generally more uniform on open lawns, which is why Purdue recommends one where possible. A drop spreader releases product only under its hopper, so it wins beside ponds, borders and driveways. Its penalty is that every skipped strip shows up as a pale line.
Can I fertilize during a heat wave or a drought?
No. Extension guidance is to avoid fertilizing dormant or severely drought-stressed turf, because the grass cannot use the nitrogen and salt injury becomes likely. As a practical threshold, stop feeding cool-season lawns above about 85°F (29°C), and wait for a dormant lawn to green up first.
Why does my lawn have stripes after fertilizing?
Stripes are an application pattern, not a disease. Dark bands mean passes overlapped, pale bands mean they did not, and scorched arcs mean the hopper stayed open through a turn. Calibrate to half your target rate and cover the lawn twice at right angles to mask both faults.
