How to sharpen a lawn mower blade
Inspect, remove, sharpen and balance a serviceable rotary mower blade, then reinstall it to the manufacturer’s specifications.
What you need
Model-specific manual, gloves, eye protection, suitable socket, blade restraint, bench vice, metal file and blade balancer. Have a torque wrench covering the manual’s specified value and any replacement fasteners the manual requires.
Step by step
- Make starting impossible. Park on firm, level ground, stop the motor, remove the key and wait for movement to stop. Let the machine cool. Follow its isolation procedure: disconnect the spark-plug lead on a petrol mower, remove removable batteries and safety key on a battery mower, or unplug a corded mower.
- Access the blade as the manual specifies. Use the stated tipping direction for a walk-behind mower to prevent fuel or oil entering the wrong parts. For a ride-on, use its approved deck-removal or supported service procedure. Never work under a machine supported only by a jack.
- Record the assembly. Photograph the blade orientation and the order of washers or spacers. Restrain the blade with the specified tool or wood block. Check the fastener’s loosening direction in the manual; do not assume all designs are identical.
- Remove and inspect. Clean the blade so cracks and wear are visible. Replace a bent, cracked, deeply damaged or excessively worn blade with the correct part. Do not weld it, straighten it or grind away major damage to make it look usable.
- File a serviceable edge. Clamp the removed blade securely. Follow the original cutting bevel with steady file strokes, removing only enough metal to restore the edge. Work on both cutting ends; leave mounting surfaces and holes unchanged. Do not create a thin razor edge or alter the blade shape.
- Check balance. Use a blade balancer suitable for the mounting hole. If one end drops, correct it using the manufacturer’s balancing method, removing small amounts and checking again. A blade that cannot be balanced safely needs replacement.
- Reassemble exactly. Install the correct side toward the deck, with hardware in the specified order. Use new fasteners where required. Tighten to your exact model’s torque with a torque wrench; a value from another mower is not transferable.
- Check the cut. Remove tools, restore the mower to operating position and reconnect power only after assembly is complete. Start from the normal operating position with bystanders clear. Stop immediately for unusual vibration or noise and recheck the assembly before mowing.
When to sharpen again
Inspect grass tips after the next mow. A clean cut is the goal; ragged, shredded tips can indicate a dull blade or another mower problem. Follow the service interval in the manual and inspect after striking an object. Record the service date and blade part number for next time.
