How to apply iron to a lawn
Check whether iron is appropriate, choose a lawn-labelled product and apply an accurately measured dose without staining paths.
What you need
A soil report or diagnostic advice, lawn-labelled iron product, tape measure, dedicated measuring tools, compatible sprayer or spreader, broom and the protection listed on the product.
Step by step
- Confirm the purpose. For suspected deficiency, review a soil test and ask whether pH, drainage or root problems are reducing availability. Soil iron concentration alone does not tell you whether the grass can use it. A cosmetic green-up is optional, not a reason to exceed a feeding plan.
- Read the full analysis. Choose a product intended for your lawn and application method. Check whether it also contains nitrogen or other nutrients and count those in your feeding total. An iron-based moss killer has different directions from a nutritional iron supplement.
- Choose the right conditions. Use the label’s temperature and lawn-moisture limits. Postpone on heat- or drought-stressed grass. For a foliar treatment, allow the specified rain-free and irrigation-free interval. Granular products may instead need watering after application.
- Measure and calculate. Divide the lawn into simple rectangles and add their areas. Product needed = application rate × area, using the units on the label. For a hypothetical 20 g/m² product rate over 40 m², weigh 800 g of product. This is a calculation example, not an iron recommendation.
- Test the equipment. Calibrate liquid coverage with clean water over a measured area before adding concentrate. A stronger mixture does not compensate for uneven walking. For a spreader, measure output and use the product-specific setting only as a starting point.
- Protect surfaces and spread evenly. Iron can stain paving, stone, equipment and clothing. Mix where spills can be contained. Keep the application inside the lawn boundary; close the spreader or release the trigger before stopping and turning. Sweep stray dry granules off hard surfaces before they get wet.
- Complete the correct aftercare. Follow the product’s watering, mowing and access instructions. Clean equipment as directed, keeping wash water out of drains. Record the amount and any nitrogen applied.
What to expect
A foliar colour response can appear within a few days and may last only a few weeks. Photograph the same small area before and after under similar light. If it does not improve, investigate the cause instead of increasing the dose. Excess application can darken or scorch turf. Follow the minimum repeat interval even if the colour fades.
Common questions
Does iron lower the soil pH enough to fix alkaline soil?
A colour treatment is not a soil-acidification programme. Use a separate laboratory recommendation before attempting to change soil pH.
Should I water iron in straight away?
It depends on the formulation. Follow the instructions for foliar or soil application; watering too soon can defeat a foliar treatment.
