Use grub preventer on a lawn with confirmed past grub damage. If grubs are damaging the lawn now, identify and count them first: prevention and treatment of an existing infestation are different jobs.

What you need

A labelled grub product, tape measure, scale, compatible spreader, broom, label-required protective clothing and enough irrigation to water it in.

Step by step

1. Confirm whether treatment is justified. Lift several roughly 1 ft² (30 × 30 cm) turf flaps near damaged and healthy edges and inspect the root zone. Record the larvae and count. Thresholds vary; many healthy lawns tolerate a few grubs. Use the grub guide or local extension help to identify them.
2. Match the product to the job. Read the active ingredient, not just the brand. A preventive targets the next generation of young grubs. An appropriate curative may be needed for damaging, actively feeding grubs in late summer or spring before pupation. Products containing only surface-active pyrethroids are not a reliable choice for root-feeding grubs.
3. Check the label and forecast. Confirm the lawn use, application window, area rate, watering amount, protective clothing and re-entry interval. Do not apply if you cannot supply the required irrigation, or if runoff is likely.
4. Prepare the lawn. Mow flowering weeds before treatment where required to reduce pollinator exposure. Keep product away from flower beds and prevent drift. Mowing reduces risk; systemic residues can still reach later flowers. If thick thatch needs removal, arrange that work for a season when your grass can recover.
5. Measure, weigh and calibrate. Calculate the amount for the treatment area. Test spreader output on a measured strip; do not guess an unlisted setting. If using two crossing passes, calibrate each to half the total dose and count the test strip toward the total.
6. Spread evenly. Follow the bag’s grass-moisture instructions and your spreader’s lane spacing. Keep the hopper closed at turns and stops. Sweep granules off paving and collect any concentrated spills.
7. Water in as directed. Supply the label’s amount promptly; many grub-control instructions call for about ½ inch (13 mm). Use catch containers to measure it and pause if runoff starts. Follow the re-entry instruction, then record the application.

After the job

Check the lawn again during the local late-summer feeding period. If damage develops, inspect for living grubs before applying anything else. Do not repeat a preventive to treat large grubs simply because the first application appears to have failed.

Follow any product-specific seeding or cultivation restrictions. There is no single season-long aeration ban for all grub products. Keep the lawn healthy and reassess the need for prevention next year.

Using beneficial nematodes

Choose a fresh product for the identified pest: chafer grubs and leatherjackets require different choices. Follow the supplier’s storage and soil-temperature limits. Apply to moist soil in the evening or dull weather, water in, and maintain the specified moisture afterwards, often for about two weeks. Availability of chemical products varies by country; a locally approved biological treatment may be the practical option.
